New year, new projects

My wishes for a happy new year, with a random drawing of a slightly nonchalant viking.

To start off I’ve added a page dedicated to the various project presentations, powered by the online publishing solution Issuu. I found it’s much easier to share content this way. The page lists projects in the categories Landscape Architecture, Art Lessons and Other Projects. Be sure to have a look if you’re curious about the courses we have here at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences.

This will be an exciting year. UKA in Ås 2012 is set to launch in October, and I’m currently in the design and marketing team, working on the visual profile and websites of the festival. Concept development has been completed, and we are now carving out design elements. There is much work to be done, and I’m looking very much forward to it.

As editor of the student organisation for future landscape architects and -engineers at UMB, Terra Forma, I’m looking forward to exposing the organisation even more to the community, contribute to new events and arrangements and keep the website updated with fresh news, tips and job offers for our fellow students. The event planning has already begun.

Regarding this blog, I will most likely begin to divide the content into Norwegian and English sections. Project presentations (unless the courses are given in English) and topics of local interest will most likely be written in Norwegian. Application reviews and the like will continue to be written in English.

Here’s to a content-rich new year!

Social Circles

Just yesterday I was invited to Google+ by one of my inner circle friends – a term more appropriate than ever – and in that context I wanted to share a few thoughts on it, and at the same time what I’m feeling about other popular social media platforms today.

I’m what you would call the average social media user, perhaps even above average. I have a profile on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, deviantArt (until just recently), YouTube and Flickr, a few WordPress blogs, and I use them all fairly regularly. I probably qualify as “knowledgeable” in a social media context. Not an expert by any means, but I know my way around.

Impressions from Copenhagen

At the end of the second introductory course in landscape architecture, we went to Copenhagen for a few days to study some of the finest examples of urban planning with our own eyes. A trip which did many things to me personally – viewing both historic sites and new innovative planning in public spaces and city streets. Being in a group where everyone has a common field of interest really inspires, and it does so while confirming that your field of vision really has altered since the start of the studies; you experience places differently, you see them with greater depth, you notice tons of details you didn’t before. To me, this alone is reason enough to study a profession such as landscape architecture. Combine this with the increased knowledge of society, psychology, economy, law, biology, ecology and not to mention the artistic skills – I can’t think of a better subject to devote future years to.
